These are causes you may have that are making you feel pain in your hips. Of course you should see a doctor but if you are feeling symptoms and are curious what that cause of the pain can come from these 5 causes can give you an idea.
I never knew what the causes of my hip pain were and it took 10 years of doctor visits on and off to figure it out. Sometimes the problem is hard to detect or can be confused with a different issue. Take a look at these pain causes.
Having muscles strains or sprains is the most common back pain issue. It’s so common that people rarely go to the doctor when they are feeling this type of pain.

A pinched nerve can happen when there is too much pressure on the nerve by surrounding body parts such as bones, muscles, or tissues. When pressure gets put on the nerve it gets interrupted and can’t function properly, this causes pain, numbness, and weakness.
There are situations when a previous injury can cause a pinched nerve. This can be from an old scar tissue that was in the way or something else like:

When you experience this type of pain it doesn’t usually last long and can bring no further pain once it is treated. On another note, if you do nothing to treat or give no therapy to relieve pressure on the nerve then you may have chronic pains which can become worse.
The way most people treat a pinched nerve is to get rest. You don’t want to over use your muscles and put more pressure on the nerve. There are other methods that your doctor may recommend. The main thing is to undo the pressure that is being put on the nerve.
For instant relief you can take an anti-inflammatory medication. Your doctor may proscribe you some or you can get over the counter medicine such as ibuprofen. If nothing else works your doctor may suggest surgery.
Arthritis happens mostly when a person is aging or if it can be hereditary. It’s when you have inflammation in your joints. You can have inflammation in multiple joints or just one. I can bring pain to your thigh area, your groin, or hips. Basically you can feel arthritis almost anywhere where there are joints that connect bones together.
Common signs of arthritis are:
- Sharp pain
- Swollen joints
- Stiff when trying to move
- Can’t move like normal
- Numb feeling in areas
The treatment for arthritis mainly focuses on pain relieve and mobility.
Anti-inflammatory medications or pain pills are a normal method of pain relieve when experiencing arthritis. You may also get proscribed a type of medicine that will slow or stop your immune system from attacking your joints known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs.
You may also be recommended to do physical therapy to help strengthen your joints and stay mobile. If your situation is severe then you may be suggested to have surgery.
This is also known as ruptured or slipped disc. A herniated disc can happen when the soft gel like substance that holds things together in your spinal disc is moved into a space that interrupts nerves that makes it painful and numbing.
There are situations where people don’t feel pain when having a herniated disc; it’s all on the placement of each disc on the individual.
Other pains you may feel are:
- Pain in hip and thigh
- Pain in buttocks
- Tingling feelings
- Weakness in areas
Herniated disc can be treated at home but it is encouraged to see a doctor to determine the seriousness of the situation. If it is minor your doctor may suggest wearing a special back brace to help heal. If it is severe the doctor may require for you to go into surgery to fix the issue.
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
This is the problem that I go through and has been a pain in my life. Your sacroiliac joint (SI joint) is what connects your hip to your sacrum. Your sacrum is the triangular bone between the lumbar spine and tailbone. It is the middle part of the upper body, pelvis, and legs, so it is made to absorb the shock that your body gives while making movements.
You can imagine that if the SI joint gets injured or feels strain it can cause radiating pain in your hip, back, and groin area being that it is what connects them all.
Treatment focuses on reducing pain and restoring normal motion to the SI joint.
To treat this pain you will have to focus on reducing the pain by taking anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, it’s what helps me a lot. Another pain reducer is to exercise regularly. Sometimes it can be hard to exercise but you have to do what you can do, as long as you are mobile and not sitting around being stiff.
Your doctor will not have much to suggest except easing the pain with medication and exercise, trust me I know. They may suggest an injection of steroid into the joint which will help temporarily. In my opinion it is a good idea to invest into a SI hip belt; this is a great way to ease pain while still being active.
