I was in a forum online and seen someone asking about the best back brace for javelin throwers. This made me does some research to see what javelin throwers were saying.

Some said that it doesn’t matter as long as it is made to secure your back, so I did more research.

I found out that there are two types of back braces that javelin throwers wear. A lumbar leather belt and a lumbar breathable material back brace.

The main back brace or belt that is worn by javelin throwers is a Gill Nordic Back Brace but they can be a little pricey.

A leather lumbar belt is mostly what I see javelin throwers wearing if not the Nordic. It has a secure belt strap and has buckles to tighten. This type of belt is usually seen with weight lifters in the gym who lift heavy weights.

Another type of back brace is a normal lumbar back brace that has double straps with Velcro grips. This back brace is usually made of breathable material and is flexible yet sturdy.

Why Do Javelin Throwers Wear Belts?

As you know, javelin throw is a track and field event and is played in the Olympics. Getting a running start and throwing an 8 foot long spear can bring wear and tear to your body.

Since you are judged by how far you throw it makes sense to train very hard. You have to train your upper body to allow yourself to get super long length.

Being that players have to train real hard to have the type of upper strength they need, sometimes players can have back pain. This pain can make your throw have less momentum.

A back brace can help to alleviate the pain while training and also allow for healing. Your core is the main source of strength needed to be a great thrower. Your hips and shoulders have to be very flexible as well.

When throwing a heavy object you’re hardest, it can take a lot of energy out of you. You can also strain your back real hard by giving it your all. This is why a lot of javelin throwers wear a back brace.

Just like lifting weight in the gym, a professional weight lifter might put on a back brace just to lift one rep of the heaviest weights ever. This is because that one rep is putting a lot of strain on the back.

Same thing with a javelin thrower, that one throw is putting a lot of strain on the back, if you’re not careful you can really injure yourself. A back brace can save your back and spine.

I spent some time online researching Javelin throwing and found lots of information and reasons why some may feel back pain. First off, I want to say that expert coaching is a must and I am not a javelin throwing coach, I’m just giving information that I read from those who are.

A lot of the back pain can come from the position that you may stand before you throw the javelin. The force that you try to accumulate before the throw is what can put much strain on your back and other parts of your body.

This is a mistake made by lots of beginner Javelin throwers. This is why it’s raining is very important and making sure your form is correct with every throw you make. One out of position throw can throw your back and other parts out.

This is why it’s very important to make sure you are not overarching when you throw. If you over Arch you put a lot of responsibility on your back to give the momentum to the release. The release you’re coming from full body form and your core.

Back Brace For Javelin Throwers

If you wear a back brace for the majority of your training you may become dependent on it so it is good to practice without it also. A back brace is made to protect your back and also to prevent any injury. If you feel that you don’t need a back brace you don’t have to wear one but it can be a good option to protect yourself.

Make sure that the back brace is well-fitting and not too loose or too tight. This is important as you won’t get the full protection of your back if it doesn’t fit right.

The whole point is to stabilize your back and give support to your muscles, spine, and ligaments. In a sport that causes for lots of strain on your back and torso area in general a back brace is very common.

Of course you will want to train with the back brace on if you plan to wear it during a competition. If you put on a back brace while in a competition and you never trained with a back brace on then you may feel uncomfortable and you may not perform at your best.

I will set a schedule of time where I trained with my back brace just to stay used to it and not feel uncomfortable during times where you really need it.

Throwing While Injured

Throwing a javelin while injured is something that a medical professional may not recommend. Even though they may not recommend it a lot of players still do it.

The reason why it is dangerous and you put yourself at risk is because Javelin throwing requires you to get a running start then plant your feet and use your body to force the javelin through the air.

The running start and a sudden stop can affect your knees and lower back. The momentum you get from the run in the sudden stop put wear and tear on your knees and lower back.

After the sudden stop the body is used to hurl the javelin through the air. This is something that can also put lots of strain on your back if not done properly.

There are professionals who have been successful at competing while injured. They did this by wearing a back brace that secured a back and using good form to allow their body to let motion to throw the javelin instead of a lot of force.

You should talk with a medical professional about any injuries that you may have to see if it is a major risk to compete. If a medical professional says that you’re okay to participate and Javelin throwing then you are good to go.

On the other hand if they say that you’re not okay to participate, depending on the severity of your injury you may be able to wear a back brace to keep you safe when you come back from the injury and begin training again.

Javelin Thrower Workout Tips

If you are a beginner Javelin thrower or someone that is thinking about starting, then it is good to begin exercising in training.

This type of sport requires you to have flexibility and strength and your lower half of your body as well as your top half of your body.

The training mostly focuses on your hips, your core, and your shoulders. There are other parts that benefit from the training as well but these are the main three.

Set a schedule for yourself and always dig deep to find new exercises that will benefit your body and get you ready to begin your journey on being a javelin thrower. Talk with professionals or coaches to get ideas on the movements, motions, and form that you should practice.

  • Power clean – This exercise focuses on your upper body strength.
  • Medicine ball sit up throw – this exercise focuses on your core strength.
  • Cable straight arm pullovers – This exercise will focus on your arm strength.
  • Medicine Ball Chest Pass Throw – This exercise will develop your whole body pushing power.
  • Medicine ball slams – this exercise focuses on your throwing power.

My Thoughts

Being a javelin thrower requires your body to develop good muscle memory. The reason is because the more your muscles are used to the act of throwing something that is so large at a high momentum, the more farther you will throw and the less chances you have at being injured.

This is why training is important. While training in the beginning it may be good to wear a back brace to protect your body until your whole body is used to the process. This goes for any sport and activity where you have to use so much strength and energy at one time.
